The £3.1m contract is for the construction of a 0.8km single carriageway highway including junctions and roundabouts, foot-ways and cycle ways.
Works have commenced with the demolition of part of the former RAF Sealand (originally RAF Shotwick) base
The new road into the site is off the Welsh Road, north of the River Dee, west of the A550 and A494 near Garden City. The first phase of the road will take less than a year to build and there are further phases of the project to extend the road to open up further development sites.
The road is seen by the Welsh Government as a major strategic project opening up 420 acres of development land. Deeside has been designated as part of the Deeside Enterprise Zone. HM Treasury have also announced that enhanced capital allowances are to be made available to support selected investment on part of the Northern Gateway Site.
Outline planning permission is in place for Northern Gateway, owned by Praxis and Pochin Goodman. Praxis site. 2015

Norton Bridge Rail Improvements

Overview:
Civil engineering works on Network Rail’s £250million Stafford Area Improvements Programme. The project provides improved capacity and performance on the Stafford section of the West Coast main line through the delivery of three key projects – line speed improvements between Crewe and Norton Bridge, resignalling Stafford Station and the surrounding area; the construction of six miles of new railway including a new flyover, road/river/footpath diversions, 10 new bridges and one bridge enhancement, the diversion of two high pressure gas pipelines by National Grid and major environmental mitigation works.
The works themselves are being delivered by the Staffordshire Alliance – a partnership of Atkins, Laing O’Rourke, Network Rail and VolkerRail, working as part of the rail industry’s first ‘pure alliance’ - a new collaborative contract that will help to transform the delivery of rail infrastructure projects in the UK. D Morgan, were invited to join the Alliance as the lead earthworks partner.

Although the other companies in the Alliance are much larger than D Morgan, given their expertise in earthworks, were appointed the lead on all aspects of the project that involve this activity, including the current construction of the new works compound and haul roads, road junctions, with their employees co-located within the Alliance team.

The new employer/contractor relationship moves away from the more traditional ‘hub and spoke’ style of contracting towards a completely integrated ‘one team’ structure based around one unified agreement. This naturally leads to a different team dynamic, with an environment that encourages innovation, uses best practice throughout and enables a completely joined-up solution. It draws upon all the Alliance members’ skills and experience.

Surf Snowdonia, Conwy Valley

Overview:
D Morgan are building the UK’s first onshore Surf Centre for Conwy Adventure Leisure at Dolgarrog (http://www.surfsnowdonia.co.uk/ ).

Surf Snowdonia is a showcase for the World’s first publicly accessible Wavegarden® artificial surfing lagoon. This revolutionary concept, which has fired the imagination of the World’s surfers, generates powerful and consistent surfing waves, of varying heights up to 2m, in a 300m long lagoon. It is ideal for all surfers, from grommets (beginners both young and old) to professional surfers. Surf Snowdonia will also play host to events, competitions and surf demos, giving the public access to the World’s top surfers.
Complementing the Wavegarden facility will be a range of other exciting attractions.
On the site of the derelict former Dolgarrog Aluminium works D Morgan are building a 300m long x 113m wide reservoir to house the surfing lagoon. Works commenced with site clearance, cut and fill bulk earthworks, breaking up of existing brick and concrete; the importing of a substantial quantity of hardcore; and the remediation of contaminated hotspots.
The project is in a sensitive environmental location. It is adjacent to the tidal River Conwy and surrounded by a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), an oak and birch woodland rich in invertebrates with a large badger population, so the control of contaminated ground water and the general control of ground waters during construction is of paramount importance.
In addition to the structures the works will include extensive landscaping and the provision of screened car parks. The contract was worth £5m to D Morgan.
