ROF Chorley, Buckshaw Village

Major Development Project:

ROF Chorley was the largest munitions factory in Europe, and the 15-year remediation project regenerated the site for the new Buckshaw Village housing, schools, retail and leisure, industrial and commercial units. D Morgan undertook the first remediation contract on the site, and through competitive tender won a further 11 contracts on-site, including the final remediation contract, Group1 Remediation.
Our dedication, commitment, and mutual respect between Client and Contractor resulted in repeat and ongoing work on the project:
  • demolished and processed 1.0 million m³ of building and underground foundations for re-use
  • constructed bulk earthworks cut to fill and careful selected and re-used of 2.0 million m³ materials
  • constructed 7.3km of highways to adoptable standards including associated drainage and attenuation
  • produced and used demolition material of 6F1 and 6F2 and MOT materials to Specification for Highways Works
  • remodelled the site to manage the earthworks balance, to ensure best use of all site materials.
  • excavated the surface soils to nominal 200mm depth across the entire development 
  • planing and removal from site asphalt off roads,  
  • excavation of sub soils in road box 
  • haulage and deposition of materials 
  • cut and fill to design profile 
  • compaction of material as engineering fill 
  • protection and diversion of Buckshaw Brook  
  • breakout and demolition of a number of weir walls 
  • construction of 4 new concrete weir walls

Our Involvement as Principal Contractor:

As the result of D Morgan’s successful work at ROF Chorley,we have worked with BAE on many other subsequent contracts for remediation, demolition, earthworks and site preparation, including ROF Bishopton; BAE Warton; ROF Glascoed, and ROF Radway Green. As with all the contracts described D Morgan undertook all earthworks, demolition, and site remediation using plant from our own Plant Division.
